Founded in 1931, the American Women's Club of Zurich welcomes US and North American citizens and women of all nationalities who appreciate the American way of life. We are a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to providing opportunities for friendship and personal development. We also actively engage in philanthropic and community service projects in the greater Zurich region, throughout Switzerland and in the larger global community.
The AWCZ is a founding member of FAWCO, an international network of around 12,000 members in 64 clubs spanning 34 countries. This not-for-profit, UN-accredited organization promotes the interests of American citizens living abroad. FAWCO contributes to the global community through development grants, educational awards and support for disaster relief funds. As a member of the AWCZ you are also a member of FAWCO.
FAWCO is an international federation of independent organization whose mission is to build strong support networks for its American and international membership; to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide; to advocate for the rights of U.S. citizens overseas; and to mobilize the skills of its membership in support of global initiatives for education, the environment, health and human rights.
FAWCO serves as a resource and channel of information for its members, promotes the rights of U.S. citizens living overseas and contributes to the global community through philanthropy and global issues task forces.
A not-for-profit New York-based corporation, FAWCO is also a UN-accredited NGO with Special Consultative Status to the UN Economic and Social Council.
The philanthropic arm of FAWCO - The FAWCO Foundation - is an independent entity, which has donated more than $1,000,000 in education awards and development grants since its inception in 1967.
FAWCO’s members and volunteers are motivated individuals who care about the world and want to make it a better place. FAWCO’s overarching goal is to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide, especially in the areas of human rights, health, education and the environment.
There is no place like home…
One of the goals of the AWCZ is to make Zurich feel more like home to its members.
The Member to Member Care Team (MMCT) helps achieve this by creating a member support network. Our goal is to provide, whenever possible, short term support with complete discretion, to an AWCZ member who requires special assistance because of an unforeseen circumstance. This is how we can help: when a member is recovering from an illness or surgery, a Care Rep in the neighborhood can assist with getting to a doctor’s visit, food shopping, meal preparation, a hospital visit. We are not certified care givers and therefore cannot provide long term or professional assistance. Nonetheless, in keeping with one of our Club’s missions, we want to show that we care about our members.
Would you like to be a part of this project? You can help in two ways. First, let us know if you hear of a member who might need special assistance. Second, consider becoming a Care Rep. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know AWCZ members living in your area and to offer invaluable help to the AWCZ community. Volunteers do not commit to a regular schedule but are part of a team willing to be called upon as needed in your area.
