TAI CHIT’ai chi is an ancient, health-giving consciousness-raising ‘exercise’ regime that originated around 1,000 years ago in China. It comprises a sequence of postures, performed with great care and slowness. Breathing is calmed and deepened, distractions evaporate while a sense of ‘centeredness’ and equanimity develop. It produces strength, energy and self-awareness.

Regular t’ai chi practice, it has been said, confers the strength of a lumberjack, the pliability of a child and the wisdom of a sage, which is a very Chinese way of saying it develops mind, body and spirit in a balanced way. The actions are not merely repetitions and it is vital to pay attention to what you are doing or you will certainly lose your way. Thus t’ai chi cannot be done automatically but requires wakeful attention – the mind is alert throughout.
The graceful interplay of weight shifts, body turns and arm gestures in a smoothly flowing sequence brings about attentive calmness. Muscles are required to act in harmonious inter-relationships. Thus t’ai chi produces a very different kind of ‘fitness’ from the direct physical methods often promoted in gyms. In T’ai Chi the whole body and mind is involved at all times. The Chinese attribute health and longevity to those regularly practicing this art. If fitness means anything, it means fitness for living as one wishes to – and living a long life in a calm and attentive manner is no bad objective.

Robin Simmons has been giving T’ai Chi instruction since 1972. Robin has worked with several T’ai Chi teachers including (among others) John Yalenezian, Dr. Chi Chiang Tao and Seeow Poon Shing. In London he gave T’ai Chi instruction to stars of film and television. He also ran group classes. He now offers individual instruction in Zürich.
